Title: Western Painting: Big Pictures
Medium: Oil and Acrylic on Canvas
Dimensions: 108" W x 60" H
Date: 2004-7
Description: Having finished a cycle of religious work, I began to explore the notion that religious imagery and values could in some way have their visual equivalent in contemporary consumer societies’ values with popular advertising imagery in a new world of global media culture, a conglomeration of painting, sculpture, printing, photography, video, film, television, sound, and technology. Just as global media culture is a conglomeration of media, so is it a conglomeration of methods and ends, meanings and intentions. Beginning with the flowering of the Renaissance of Western European formal painting and extending this to the nostalgic American Western and consumer driven advertising of today, these works are an attempt to find a connection between vastly different intentions, if only in methods of representation, such as the use of symbols and imagery, use and exploitation of idealized female sexuality as model, and sublime revelations of power and persuasion. The intent of these paintings is to explore and represent the content and language of Western Painting and imagery itself.
