Description: In this digital media and installation work, an ongoing group of “expansion” media works, I’ve taken a painterly assemblage approach to visualization of grid space and flatness, while working within the confines of both minimal, primarily geometric art and the programmability of image making with technology. The “Similarities” began “outside the box” as simple thumbnail pencil sketches that with high tech means became a body of work mirroring the manias of computing. The images were both painted and composed completely digitally, and while being digitally printed and assembled, have animated and projected mural aspects as well. The work explores the possibility of chaos, of endless repetition and similarities, within a programmed approach to creating images, whether made into real objects or as ethereal, spectacle-like projections . The creation of this work was also a usage of the Distributed Component Object Modeling approach used in the creation of network software applications used by the information technology of far-flung corporate enterprise computing. The conglomeration of multiple objects from multiple distributed locations presents a unified object. While focusing on the process of making, an after product was produced: the usage of the gestural line drawing as a representative form within an image that is primarily surface, much like Warhol’s pop portraiture, only with abstractionist rhythms, where the machine made quality really does comes through. For me, these works bring into question what abstraction really is: the spatial context in which a work resides, like cyberspace, or perhaps what was once a bad marketing idea. The virtual assembly of the 7 digital-print panels was actually approached with web development and coding applications, as well as with the standard suite of imaging applications. Process intensive scripting led to the generation of 313 separate images, 294 of which were used to construct the 7 panels. The proposed video projection creates the animated video looping, as a heroic scale spectacle that creates a wall of 1176 animations.
