Description: These drawings represent a continuation of objective drawing applied to a search for symbolism and figuration in my work. The group was created while traveling and learning in both Madrid and Barcelona for a long period of time. At times the imagery is a reflection of Spanish history and culture, with an inflection of critique. The approach was similar to the Surrealist method of the "Fantastic Corpse", where two drawings are combined to make one. Originally begun as simple graphite drawings and washes of coffee, I later added gouache. It was an also experiment in the use of a limited palette. Created serially, like Goya's Caprichos, they are sketches for large-scale paintings. |
