Description: In this drawing, digital media and installation “expansion” work, I’ve taken a painterly assemblage approach to visualization. Grid space and flatness, working with drawing and the programmability of image making are some of the concerns in these works. It’s a group of works that’s less about “stream of consciousness” and more about Accidental Narrative, like action painting with recycled imagery. The “Histories” began “outside the box” as drawn sketches that with high tech means became a body of work mirroring the manias of computing and animated narration. The figuration of the work was painted with traditional media, then composed, and re-composed digitally. I used both the computer and the video camera more as static image makers, then, as time went by, created a video to regenerate the images, which had become like miniature stage sets, with mural-like aspects. As close-up shots, they allowed more views and perspectives than my original figuration, as though “zooming in” on a memory, or the everyday recollection of experiences. While being digitally printed and assembled, the works have animated and projected mural aspects as well. The work explores the possibility of a chaotic narrative within a programmed approach to creating images, whether made into real objects, or as ethereal, spectacle-like projections . The re-use of previously drawn and painted images collaged in a digital print are the continuation of several years worth of exploring pre-Columbian, folk, and brut image making. The compositions are completed by painting, and drawn lines demarcate perspective and space. All images, drawn, printed, and projected, come together to represent various histories of America, and are an attempt to append the pluralistic and individual nature of personal histories that ultimately document our all too human existence.
